Pros & Cons

  • Friendly work environment, hybrid work and flexible working times.
  • Respect for individual autonomy when given a project to work on - lots of support from the team for any questions or technical help needed - many learning opportunities, extra projects to jump onto if wanted - very hands on, doing a variety of tasks that are in different business areas e.g. working in NPD kitchen for recipe testing, going to the warehouse, in office - doing something different everyday, it's exciting!
  • Flexibility and there is so much to learn. The best thing is working with people who are more experienced than you, because they are so knowledgeable and experienced.
  • It is quite overwhelming coming in as a graduate. You realize that there is a lot that you don't know, that you need to learn quick. But at the same time, I'd rather be pushed than spoon fed for the whole graduate programme.
  • The reality is you will spend a lot of time in front of the screen, so making sure to take breaks.
  • We are working early in the morning and the reason is because we are produce company, so trading happens early in the morning.

Career Prospects
I am satisfied with the opportunities in this company and the horticulture industry. I am just starting out but I can already see the vast possibilities available. However, that takes hard work and dedication. If you approach this place with a humble beginner mindset then will make the most of the learning opportunities.

Culture

Culture
From my limited experience it is mostly very welcoming and friendly. I enjoy working with people from vastly different backgrounds. Entry level employees seem to enjoy it here and many have moved into leadership positions and have worked here for over 10 years.

Diversity

Diversity
From my experience the company is very committed to diversity, and I have not seen any issues in terms of discrimination. I work with people from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Islands. Everyone appears to be content. There are many women in leadership positions and in the graduate program there are equal males and females. I think this commitment to diversity fosters more diversity leading to a mutual benefit for both employees and the company itself. The company is very transparent about their ethical recruitment practices. They employ a lot of people from the Pacific Islands for seasonal labour programs. Many people return each year for 3 to 6 month stints working with the company.

The company has great facilities in its offices and also on-farm. Everyone everywhere has access to decent lunchroom and washing facilities. Everyone is given a uniform and has access to correct PPE.

Recruitment

Recruitment
Initial phone screening, interview with two HR reps, interview with two C-suites. Questions about my background, experiences and education. I was asked a range of questions about how I respond in certain situations and also asked about my aspirations and what motivates me. Know what the company does and why you want to be in this field. But biggest advice would be to just be yourself and be honest. You're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you - if they don't like your priorities or thoughts, then you're not the right fit for each other.

Salary
I think the starting salary is very good. There are yearly reviews, and with that, appropriate bonuses/pay raises. The company were fantastic in helping me relocate for the role. They paid for my first two weeks accommodation and reimbursed my expenses for the 3-day induction.

The 3 day induction included 2 days of professional development training, which I found immensely valuable in terms of approaching work, advancing my career and also developing myself outside of work.
