What did you study? When did you graduate?

I studied a Bachelor of Information Technology at RMIT University and graduated in December 2018 with a distinction.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up overseas and moved to Australia when I was a teenager. After completing my high school education in 2015, I got into university and am grateful today to be working an opportunity in a career stream that I am interested in. Before working at Infosys, I did not have any industry experience in IT.

How did you get to your current job position? For how long have you had it?

I applied for Infosys through an online job portal and have been working since March 2019.

How did you choose your specialisation? Were you weighing up any other alternatives before choosing this specialisation?

I was always interested in technology as a child. I used to spend hours on a computer just going through different files or playing games. In high school I took an IT subject and learnt the basics of programming and web development. I really enjoyed that subject as it allowed me to design and create new things through technology. That’s when I knew that technology was the right career for me.

What was your interview process like? What kind of questions were you asked?

The interview process was fairly straight forward. First I had a short general phone interview with a person from the recruitment team. In the next stage, I did a face-to-face panel interview with a manager and a technical expert. The questions were both behavioural and technical in nature. They asked me about myself, my experiences, my previous projects, about the company and of course, technical questions.

What does your employer do?

Infosys is a global digital services and consulting company with presence across 45 countries. It helps clients navigate their digital transformation journey leveraging AI, automation and digital technologies.

What are your areas of responsibility?

As a tech associate, I am responsible to work with my team in designing, developing, testing and deploying software for our clients. I am currently in my training period, after which I will be working with projects for our clients.

Can you describe a typical work day? What was the last thing you worked on?

The work environment is very calm and flexible at Infosys. I am still undergoing my training. At the end of my training period, I will be working on different projects, with different clients.

What are the career prospects with your job? Where could you or others in your position go from here?

It will all depend on what I’m more interested in. After a few years of developing software, I could have the opportunity to move into a more business associated role including business analysis and project management or I could continue in the technology and development side of the business and become a technology specialist or a senior developer.

What would your career be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

Aside from my passion in technology, I also have a passion for design, especially interior design. So, if I wasn’t in the technology stream, I would definitely be a designer.

What do you love the most about your job? Which kind of task do you enjoy the most?

In general, technology has made people’s lives so much easier and it feels so empowering knowing that what you create gets used by others and helps them in some way. I love solving problems, creating new things, and in this job, I have the opportunity to create different applications all the time. The projects are usually very different from each other so you could never get bored. Also, I love the task of designing and developing web applications.

What’s the biggest limitation of your job? Do you bear a lot of responsibility? Do you have to work on weekends? Are the stress levels high?

There is a new technology coming out every day and as a developer you have to keep up to date with all these new technologies, to be able to progress faster in this field and succeed. For example, a technology you learn today, may not be useful in a few years’ time, so you have to be able to adapt quickly.

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current university student?

  • Enjoy university as much as you can! Try to balance out studies, work and social life. Join different clubs, go to different events and socialise with different people to build a strong network.
  • Go to different career fairs that the university offers to learn about possible future employers, even if you’re in your final year because many companies hire candidates early.
  • Sometimes the stress of multiple upcoming assignment deadlines can be nerve-racking. Ask for help if possible and know that you will get through it!
